2007 Ra Joy joins IAA as Executive Director

2006 IAA holds a ground-breaking gala to celebrate 25 years of dynamic, effective, and cutting-edge arts advocacy and to honor Alene Valkanas, IAA's Executive Director from 1986 to 2007

2005 IAA/F hosts a symposium at the Chicago Cultural Center to release our Executive Compensation for Nonprofit Arts Leaders publication and research

Instead of holding an annual Arts Advocacy Day in Springfield, IL, IAA organizes twenty-one district advocacy events throughout the state to provide the opportunity for local advocates and leaders to meet one-on-one with their legislators

IAA's efforts on behalf of Illinois Creates, our new statewide arts education initiative with The Chicago Community Trust, results in a $2 million appropriation for arts education and foreign languages through the Illinois State Board of Education in FY06 - the most the State has ever appropriated specifically for arts education

IAA/F releases two new Arts Leadership publications at the fourth biennial One State: Together in the Arts conference: Filling the Gap, an interim executive director guidebook, and Working Easier, a toolkit to help arts administrators reduce stress and increase productivity

2004 IAA/F hosts an advanced, invitation-only The Advocacy Project workshop for forty arts leaders from across the state and country at the Cantigny Conference Center in Wheaton, IL

At the Midwest Rural Arts & Culture Forum in Spring Green, WI, the Midwest Arts Partnership - a collaborative venture of IAA/F, Wisconsin Assembly for Local Arts Agencies, and Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies - unveils the online Community Arts Leaders Resource Center

2003 IAA/F updates two studies - Economic Impact of the Not-for-Profit Arts Industry in Illinois and Geographic and Political Distribution of Arts-Related Jobs in Illinois - and releases them at an Arts & Business Luncheon co-hosted by the Arts & Business Council of Chicago

300 arts administrators, artists and funders attend a day-long symposium at the Chicago Cultural Center featuring the release of IAAF's new publication, Succession: Arts Leadership for the 21st Century

IAAF co-convenes with the Illinois Arts Council the third biennial One State: Together in the Arts conference, which features the release of Planning for Succession: A Toolkit for Board Members and Staff of Nonprofit Arts Organizations

2002 IAA/F celebrates its 20th year, taking on the issues of leadership succession and professional development with its new program, Arts Leadership for the 21st Century

2001 The Advocacy Project (TAP) trains and mobilizes 700 arts advocates across Illinois

1999 Thanks to IAA efforts, the Illinois General Assembly passes House Bill 1905, extending sales tax exemption to all arts and cultural organizations

IAA/F expands its mission to include service to Local Arts Agencies; the first biennial One State: Together in the Arts conference is convened

1998 IAA's Art for All campaign helps bring a $3.4 million increase to Illinois Arts Council budget

The board inaugurates the new Illinois Arts Legend Awards

1996 The Working Together project, helping arts leaders impact their communities through collaborations with local businesses, gets underway

Valentine's Day advocacy blitz delivers 7,000 valentines to legislators

1995 Two studies, Economic Impact of the Not-for-Profit Arts Industry in Illinois and Geographic and Political Distribution of Arts-Related Jobs in Illinois, are commissioned by IAAF and provide evidence that the arts in Illinois are a $1 billion industry

1993 IAA mounts a successful campaign to restore cuts from the grant program of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs

1991 IAA wins the Award of Excellence in Government Relations from the American Society of Association Executives for its coordinated campaign in support of the NEA

1990 "Vote Yes for a Creative America", the largest advocacy day in Washington D.C. includes a record 37 advocates from Illinois; thousands more rally in Chicago's Daley Plaza

1989 IAA gains kudos from backers of the right to freedom of expression with its public support of the School of the Art Institute for display of student artwork, "What is the Proper Way to Display a U.S. Flag?"

1986 Alene Valkanas joins the staff of the IAA/F as Executive Director

The IAA/F board introduces the annual Sidney R. Yates Advocacy Awards

1982 Arts advocates gather to oppose the threatened elimination of state funding for the arts in Illinois: the Illinois Arts Alliance/Foundation is born
