University of Chicago Cultural Policy Center

Ra Joy, Executive Director of Arts Alliance Illinois, led a discussion at the University of Chicago Cultural Policy Center on policy opportunities and challenges facing the arts sector in Illinois.

Key take-aways from Ra's remarks:

  • Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and their audiences contribute at least $2.2 billion annually to the Chicago economy.
  • That $2.2 billion in spending supports more than 60,000 full-time-equivalent jobs
  • The high-water mark for the National Endowment for the Arts budget was $176 million in 1992 -- that’s $288 million in 2012 dollars. Today, the NEA is funded at $146 million, or 47 cents per person.
  • Illinois will invest 63 cents per person in the Illinois Arts Council in 2013 -- that's 37 cents below the national average.
  • State investment in the arts is less than one-half of one-tenth of one percent of the total Illinois state budget.
