Every election cycle the Illinois Arts Alliance conducts a survey to determine the position of candidates running for Illinois General Assembly and U.S. Congress on arts issues. The report is now complete and can be found on the Illinois Arts Alliance website. Also available is the Americans for the Arts Congressional Report Card for the 108th session (2003-2004) U.S. House of Representatives, conducted through the Arts Action Fund. This report gives each Congressional Member of the House a grade (A+-F) based on votes they have taken on arts issues. Both reports can be found at http://www.artsalliance.org/al_survey.shtml.
Despite broad bipartisan support in both chambers, Congress was unable to resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions of the Charity, Aid, Recovery and Empowerment (CARE) ACT. Champions of the bill in Congress tried unsuccessfully to get important provisions of the bill included in a corporate tax bill. The tax bill does contain provisions regarding deductions and reporting requirements for non-cash charitable contributions. http://philanthropy.com/free/update/2004/10/2004101101.htm.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the McCormick Tribune Foundation has launched plans to build a public museum that honors the legacy of its founder: Robert R. McCormick. The McCormick Museum Foundation will design, build and operate the museum, which will be dedicated to America's freedoms - with a special emphasis on First Amendment rights - and the civic responsibilities that accompany those rights. The museum seeks to inspire generations to understand, value and protect these freedoms. As a part of this new venture, the museum has launched a competition for a Signature Work of Art. The chosen piece will serve as the central exhibit and centerpiece of the museum. It will be selected through an open, international, two-stage design competition to begin on October 11, 2004 and conclude with the unveiling of the work on April 1, 2006. The budget is $500,000. The deadline for the 1st round of submissions is December 1, 2004. Learn more at http://www.mccormickmuseum.org.
