Is there training involved? If so, what kind?
Do I have to attend training?
You mentioned earlier that there would be ongoing support once mentors and mentees were paired. What did you mean by that exactly?
Is there training involved? If so, what kind?
Participation in the Mentor Connection Service requires attendance at a training and orientation session for all program participants that includes an overview of skills and techniques that make for a more productive and enjoyable mentoring experience, as well as what to expect from mentors and mentees and what kind of support to expect from IAA.
Is training required?
Yes. We are quite sure you already know how to listen, apply logic, ask thoughtful questions, and do many other wonderful things besides. However, mentoring requires a unique set of skills, and mentoring relationships are different than other types of professional relationships. We want everyone who participates in the program to have the best experience possible, which means everyone should feel confident in both their skills and the skills of their partner.
What kind of ongoing support can mentoring pairs expect after they're matched?
In addition to training/orientation, a number of resources will be available to program participants:
- IAA's website serves as a resource center with suggested meeting agendas, reading lists and helpful links.
- IAA staff checks in with each pair on a regular basis (at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 9 months after the match is made). IAA staff is also readily available to provide support upon request throughout the 12-month program period.
- Mentors and mentees will gather at the 6-month mark and at the end of the program to share strategies and insights with other program participants and to offer feedback to the program manager.
