About Facilitated Mentoring
|
With your mentor/mentee pairs in place, you will want to have them make the commitment to the relationship through a written agreement. This document sets out the terms by which the pair agrees to work together for the duration of the program period. It is best to have a standard document that each pair signs, which outlines the guiding principles for the relationship. The agreement may or may not include the goals each participant has identified from the outset. The reasons to include the goals are to help the pair focus their efforts in the ensuing months. Reasons not to include the goals in this agreement take into account the changing needs of the participants that result from the mentoring process itself. You may want the participants to establish a second document (separate from the contract) after they have had time to meet and confer which identifies their aims for the relationship. The best time to have them sign the document is after their orientation and training session and before they begin meeting on their own. A template of the IAA's contract is available here. You may use this document on your own letterhead or develop your own using those parts which are best for your needs. Note that the IAA agreement is signed by both parties; it is a joint agreement. This is an important symbolic gesture that helps assure that the partners are making their commitment together.
